ULV stands for Ultra Low Volume and is defined as the lowest amount of liquid per unit area (chemical plus carrier) needed to achieve efficient disease and pest control. The volume of spray liquid is directly related to the droplet size, which is generally accepted as from 0 to 50 microns in the ULV spectrum, with 15-20 microns as the volume medium diameter (VDM). What does LV stand for? LV stands for Low Volume and refers to a larger droplet size. The volume of spray liquid is directly related to the droplet size, which is generally accepted as from 50 to 200 microns in the LV spectrum, with 75-150 microns as the volume medium diameter (VDM). The LV method is used for spot treatment in targeted areas, and to reduce drift in larger applications. What does a ULV Cold Fogger do? A ULV sprayer generates fog droplets by using a high volume of air at low pressure. Such a system enables droplets of a more precise size to be generated. The absence of a large number of very small droplets will limit the penetration of the fog into highly obstructed areas. ULV sprayers can dispense formulations in a more concentrated form since less diluent is required. Also, the ability to be able to calibrate the machine to produce droplets of the optimum size for the type of chemical being used make ULV spraying the method of choice whenever possible. What do you use a ULV Cold Fogger for? PEST CONTROL (Insectides, Fumigants) Warehouses (roaches, silverfish) Under buildings (roaches) In restaurants (roaches, flies) Kennels (flies, fleas) Stables, barns, chicken houses (flies) DE-HUMIDIFICATION (Fogging Water) Control humidity in guitar factories, wine barrel storage rooms, small greenhouses, plant preparation rooms. Keep dust down and humidity up during asbestos abatement. Evaporative cooling of barns and animal rearing facilities. SANITIZING (Biocides, Disinfectants) Food processing plants Transportation (cruise ships, airplanes, cargo containers) Pharmaceuticals packaging Production agriculture Hospitals Schools, daycare Veterinary clinics Homes and businesses ODOR CONTROL (Deodorants, Odor Neutralizers) Smoke odor removal from hotel rooms, meeting rooms Trash chutes in condominiums, apartments Kennels Solid waste transfer stations, landfills Sewage lift stations, treatment plants, lagoons Composting facilities Production agriculture: barns and rearing facilities, waste pits, lagoons Why do you use fogging equipment for these applications? Most biologically active chemicals (insecticides, fungicides, disinfectants and deodorizers) will give their best results if applied in small droplets between 10 and 100 microns in size, according to chemical type. However, droplets in this size range are highly susceptible to being drifted long distances by wind. This is why most outdoor (agricultural) spraying is done using droplets of 200 to 400 microns. Where wind drift is advantageous, or in a closed building, smaller droplets can be utilized to maximize the efficacy of the chemical and reduce application costs.
